Facebook Messenger has unveiled its latest addition – the Notes feature – which is similar to Instagram’s inbox Notes. It aims to to increase interaction among users. This new feature allows users to share text-based prompts visible to all their Messenger contacts, sparking increased conversation within the app.

Adding to the existing row of profile bubbles housing Stories within the Messenger inbox, users can now include text notes, inviting responses and engagement within the platform.

While seemingly not groundbreaking at first glance, the success of Notes on Instagram, particularly among younger audiences, is noteworthy. Meta revealed that over the past three months, more than 100 million teens had shared a Note on IG, with them creating Notes that are ten times higher than non-teen users.

This increase in teenage engagement stands as an important point for Meta. Acknowledging the reduced interest of younger audiences in platforms like Facebook and Instagram, any feature showing promise among this demographic is crucial for Meta’s sustained relevance. The company aims to retain users within its apps instead of losing them to competitors like Snapchat or TikTok.

While older audiences may not find it revolutionary, Messenger’s Notes feature holds significant relevance for younger users. Moreover, it serves as a low-cost test, adding a new connection option without extensive development time.

Compared to Instagram’s Notes, Messenger’s feature has limitations. Users cannot incorporate music, GIFs, or videos. However, Notes will stay visible for 24 hours, featuring concise prompts of up to 60 characters, ideal for initiating conversations. This feature could be especially handy during holiday catch-ups, facilitating easy communication with all contacts.

Presently, Business Pages are unable to utilise Notes. This limitation prevents an inundation of promotional content in user feeds, a choice made with user experience in mind.

The introduction of Notes by Messenger may not revolutionise the platform, but its potential to engage younger users could be a crucial step for Meta’s ongoing strategy to maintain user interest and participation.

What is a Messenger App? 

Facebook’s Messenger is a messaging platform which is integrated into Facebook’s social media ecosystem. It allows users to communicate with friends, family, and contacts by sending text messages, making voice and video calls, and sharing photos, videos, and other multimedia content.
